Ammonite Lytoceras 9.2cm
Lytoceras Ammonite, fossil for sale from Madagascar. This large, gorgeous Lytoceras Ammonite measuring 9.2cm at its widest point has been carefully polished on top of the fossilised shell, which displays earthy brown tones, an intricate fern-like suture pattern, and a semi-iridescent effect where rainbows shimmer across its surface when exposed to the light.
Sourced from the jungles of Mahajanga in Madagascar, this fossil is 120 million years old and dates back to the Cretaceous Period. The original shell of the Ammonite was replaced over a very long period of fossilisation, wherein water dissolved the original hard parts of the ammonite shell and replaced it with mineral matter: most commonly, Calcite minerals.
Lytoceras is a species of Ammonite (an extinct marine mollusc) that can often be distinguished from other ammonites by the large horn shape of the shell.
This high-grade Ammonite fossil is perfect for a collector or as a unique gift. Piece comes complete with display stand.
