Lapis Lazuli has captured the imagination for millennia, and we are now proud to offer this high-grade crystal for sale, sourced from the mines of Afghanistan.
This crystal is an opaque stone that is found in multiple shades of blue. For this reason, its name translates to "Blue Stone": the word "Lazuli" is derived from the Persian term for blue. However, Lapis Lazuli also contains several other minerals that are responsible for its wide variety of hues. Calcite creates the white flecks present atop the celestial blue base, while pyrite bestows royal flakes of gold.
Lapis Lazuli has a storied history in many ancient cultures and civilisations all over the world. Perhaps most famously, it was coveted in Ancient Egypt. The crystal was used to make amulets and jewellery and was so precious to the Egyptians because they believed the colours and patterns of the crystal resembled the Heavens. Lapis Lazuli was also used to decorate the burial chambers of members of the royalty and High Priests, and it was even used in the death mask of the famed Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The crystal was modified in various ways and was crushed to form the blue eyeshadow used by Cleopatra.
This crystal was also prized by Renaissance painters. It was crushed to create blue powder paint, with Michael Angelo favouring the ultramarine dye made from the stone to create the intricate paintings on the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.
Known as the Wisdom Keeper, Lapis Lazuli is also believed to have powerful healing and metaphysical properties. It is said to heighten mental awareness and acuity, thereby gifting its user with increased wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and problem-solving abilities.
A perfect stone for history lovers, crystal healers, or simply those who love the appearance of this electrifying crystal.
