What Is Ametrine Made Of?

Ametrine is a form of Quartz, a silicate mineral composed of silicon dioxide.

This colourful gem is a mixture between two varieties of Quartz: purple Amethyst, and golden-yellow Citrine.

Ametrine's unique interplay of colours is due to iron oxidising at different rates during the crystal's formation.

At certain temperatures, Amethyst will form, and at others, Citrine will.

When the temperature changes during the crystal's formation, parts of the crystal will become Amethyst, whilst other parts will become Citrine, leading to the stunning zones of colour characteristic of Ametrine.

This beautiful gemstone also is gorgeously translucent.

Where Does Ametrine Come From?

This crystal is rare: the main natural source of rough Ametrine in the world is located in the remote Anahi Mine in Bolivia.

For this reason, Ametrine is sometimes referred to as Bolivianite (although it is also known as Trystine).

Ametrine History

The legend of Ametrine is that in the 1700s, a Spanish Conquistador met a Bolivian princess named Anahi, whom he married.

The princess's father gifted the conquistador with a mine upon the marriage, which he named the Anahi mine after his wife.

This mine was discovered to contain what is now known as Ametrine.

The gorgeous gem was thus introduced to the rest of the world when the conquistador gifted a piece of Ametrine to the Queen of Spain.

Ametrine Crystal Healing Properties

Fostering a sense of focus, energy and creativity within the user, crystal healers report this stone to be both deeply stimulating and intensely spiritual.

Ametrine embodies harmony between the best metaphysical properties of Amethyst and Citrine

The gem provides a strong link between the spirituality of Amethyst and the earthly, elemental energy of Citrine.

This link means that Ametrine is believed to ensure harmony between body, mind, and spirit.

Ametrine provides clarity of mind and mental acuity, whilst allowing its user to dream big by igniting their creativity and curiosity.

Ametrine Chakras

Due to its combination of two gemstones, Ametrine affects a variety of chakras.

The Citrine elements lend Ametrine power over the Solar Plexus Chakra: when used with this chakra, Ametrine can gift its user with willpower and determination.

The Amethyst elements ensure Ametrine is connected to the Third Eye Chakra and Crown Chakra: when used with these chakras, Ametrine enables connection to one's spirituality and a powerful sense of imagination.

The combination of these chakras means that spiritually, Ametrine is considered to help one visualise and imagine their dreams (due to the Amethyst's powers), and then actually manifest them (thanks to the Citrine's properties of prosperity and abundance).

How Hard Is Ametrine?

Measuring 7 on the Mohs scale, this stone is relatively hard and durable and resistant to scratching, but care should still be taken not to damage the crystal surface.

To clean the crystal, simply use water and dry it afterwards with a soft cloth.
