What Is Agate Made Of?

Agate is a member of the Chalcedony group of stones, which is a member of the large Quartz family.

All types of Quartz are composed from silica (otherwise known as silicon dioxide), but differ due to their crystal structures.

What Does Chalcedony Mean?

Chalcedony gems such as Agate are microcrystalline in structure, which means you can't see the crystals inside the stone.

Amethyst Quartz, however, can be observed in crystal form as it is not a form of Chalcedony.

Agate is generally distinguished from other types of Chalcedony due to its banded patterns and translucency: for example, Jaspers tend to be opaque and you cannot see through them if you shine a light through them.

Other types of Chalcedony gemstones include Jasper, Carnelian, and Chrysoprase.

Other Types Of Agate

Agate comprises a diverse group of stones which can come in many colours and patterns.

Examples include Moss Agate, which demonstrates moss-like patterns (as well as Quartz Agate, which displays moss agate patterns as well as crystalline quartz), and Cherry Blossom Agate, which displays patterns that look like the flowers of the Cherry Blossom tree.

Banded Agate showcases some of the stunning banded patterns Agate is famed for, and Orca Agate displays stunning blue and white colours.

Eye Agate is a prized form of Agate which displays concentric circles resembling eyes: our unique Amethyst Agate often displays these striking patterns.

Where Does Agate Come From?

Agate in its various forms can be found all over the globe.

This particular piece was sourced from Brazil

Agate History

Agate was first recorded as being discovered in Sicily, near the River Achates, from which it gained its name.

It has been found in many archaeological sites, including in Greece where Agate carvings date back to the Bronze Age.

Agate Crystal Healing Properties

Agate is a renowned stone in the crystal healing world and is useful for bringing harmony, stability, and balance to one's life.

This type of stone comes in many different forms, yet all forms of Agate tend to have a soothing, positive energy which serves to stabilise the body and mind of its user.

Agate Chakras

As Agates are so varied in colour, they tend to resonate with all chakras.

Brown Agates, of which this piece displays elements, resonate with the Root Chakra due to their earthy colouring and thus offer protection and grounding to their users.

Amethyst Agate tends to display light purple, blue, and white tones, and thus can connect to the higher chakras and higher levels of consciousness.

How Hard Is Agate?

Measuring 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, this mineral is relatively hard and durable and resistant to scratching, but care should still be taken not to damage the crystal surface.

To clean the crystal, simply use water and dry it afterwards with a soft cloth.
