Large Rhodonite crystals for sale from Madagascar

This stunning, large Rhodonite Sphere measures 8.5cm in diameter, and demonstrates a rich pink hue contrasted against vivid black and hints of brown.

The pink gem has been carefully hand-polished, and as the Rhodonite crystal lends itself well to being carved or worked, has been artfully transformed into a sphere shape.

What Is Rhodonite Made Of?

Rhodonite is a silicate mineral which is relatively uncommon, and is more specifically known as a manganese silicate.

This pink stone varies in chemical composition, but often has large amounts of magnesium and iron within its crystal matrix.

The variation in mineral inclusions leads to the variation of colour commonly observed in Rhodonite: the base colour can range from lighter rose pinks to shades of raspberry and deep reds.

Rhodonite is famous for the veins of black manganese oxide running through it which create fascinating patterns, often dendritic (branch-like) in nature.

Although similar in appearance and composition, Rhodonite is not to be confused with Rhodochrosite.

Where Does Rhodonite Come From?

Rhodonite is somewhat uncommon, and only found in small deposits around the world.

These deposits are located in many countries, including Russia (where it was first discovered), and the USA (where it is the state stone of Massachusetts).

This particular piece was sourced from Madagascar.

Rhodonite History

This lovely pink crystal sourced its name from the Greek word 'Rhodon', meaning rose, due to its signature pink tones.

Rhodonite In Russia

This pink mineral was first found in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the late 18th century, where it quickly became a very popular lapidary material.

Local legends earned the stone its nickname 'Eagle Stone', or 'Urletz' as it is known in Russian: locals claimed to observe eagles and other birds pick up pieces of Rhodonite and keep them in their nests.

Rhodonite began to be used as a good luck stone and talisman in Russia upon its discovery.

As its popularity grew, Russian artists and architects began to use Rhodonite as a material in their creations.

To this day, this stunning pink gem can be seen in carvings, decorations, and architecture throughout modern Russia, including in some of its famous cathedrals.

What Is Rhodonite Used For?

At times in the past, this unique mineral has been used as a minor ore for manganese.

Nowadays, it is mainly used for decorative purposes. Artisans carefully cut and carve the stone into interesting shapes, and polish the stone to enhance its intense colours.

However, this stone can be difficult to polish due to the differences in hardness between the Rhodonite and manganese oxide.

The heart shape of this piece is symbolic of the crystal's reported properties, for the stone is famed for nurturing love and compassion in the user.

Rhodonite is said to be deeply energising, yet also a bringer of calm and soother of difficult emotions.

This crystal is believed to boost self-confidence and self-compassion in its user.

Rhodonite Chakras

Heavily associated with the Heart Chakra, Rhodonite can be placed on this area of the body to nurture love, relationships, and empathy.

How Hard Is Rhodonite?

Measuring 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, this mineral is relatively hard and durable and resistant to scratching, but care should still be taken not to damage the crystal surface.

To clean the crystal, simply use water and dry it afterwards with a soft cloth.
