What Is Garnet Made Of?

Garnets are a group of silicate minerals including the popular variety Almandine Garnet, of which this piece is a specimen.

Almandine (also known as Almandite) is an Iron Aluminium Garnet mineral showcasing a deep red colour and this colour can sometimes verge towards purple.

The colour of Garnet is often compared to the colour of Rubies, and for this reason, Garnet is sometimes referred to as Almandine Ruby.

Where Does Garnet Come From?

Garnet can be found in many countries worldwide, including Brazil, Sri Lanka, and the USA.

Garnet History

Red Garnet is one of the oldest gemstones cut by man, and it was very popular with Roman jewellery makers. 

Red gemstones, usually Red Garnets, were historically called carbuncles.

The name 'Garnet' was derived from the Latin word for seeds, and it is thought Garnet was given this name owing to its deep red colour which is similar in shade to the red seeds of Pomegranates.

How Hard Is Garnet?

Measuring 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, Almandine Garnet is a relatively hard and durable mineral which is quite resistant to scratching, but care should still be taken not to damage the mineral's surface. 

To clean the crystal, simply use water and dry it afterwards with a soft cloth.
