Polished Phylloceras Ammonite, fossil for sale from Madagascar.

This Polished Ammonite of the Phylloceras species measuring 6.8cm at its widest point has been carefully polished on top of the fossilised shell, which displays earthy grey and brown tones and an intricate fern-like suture pattern.

Sourced from the jungles of Mahajanga in Madagascar, this fossil is 120 million years old and dates back to the Cretaceous Period. The original shell of the Ammonite was replaced over a very long period of fossilisation, wherein water dissolved the original hard parts of the ammonite shell and replaced it with mineral matter: most commonly, Calcite minerals.

Phylloceras is a species of Ammonite (an extinct marine mollusc) that can often be distinguished from other ammonites by its leaf-like suture patterns, hence the name "Phylloceras" meaning "Leaf-Horn".

This high-grade Ammonite fossil is perfect for a collector or as a unique gift. Piece comes complete with display stand.
