Nautilus, polished fossil for sale from Madagascar. This large, striking 10cm wide Polished Nautilus fossil originated from the jungles of Mahajanga on the North West coast of Madagascar, an island located off the East coast of Africa. This 120 million year old fossil dates back to the Cretaceous Period, in an era where the seas were full of Ammonite and Nautilus creatures that over time fossilised into the stunning specimens found today. Nautilus still exist in the present day, and they inhabit the deep coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific Ocean.
This piece displays rich caramel and brown colours with hints of burnt orange in an intricately striped pattern. These colours were caused by colourful calcite minerals replacing the original organic material present in the live Nautilus.
Nautilus specimens from Madagascan Direct have been carefully hand-polished to the highest grade, enhancing the vivid colours of their shells. This tactile Nautilus piece would be ideal for a collector, or as an impressive piece of interior decor in any home.
