What Is Black Tourmaline Made Of?

Tourmaline is a boron silicate mineral that contains traces of iron, magnesium and titanium, which scientists speculate are the cause of its signature black colour.

This mineral is incredibly versatile, and can occur in many colours such as greens, pinks, and reds (which is called rubellite).

Black Tourmaline, also referred to as Schorl, can be found as needles included in Clear Quartz, which creates Tourmalinated Quartz

Tourmaline Special Properties

Tourmaline is special in that it is both pyroelectric and piezoelectic: this means that it has the power to generate electrical fields of energy, like Quartz.

When charged by either heating it or rubbing it, Tourmaline becomes polarized and can attract or repel dust particles.

Where Does Tourmaline Come From?

Tourmaline can be found in various localities around the world such as Sri Lanka and the USA.

Brazil is the biggest source of Tourmaline in the world, where it is famed for being mined from the Minas Gerais region.

This particular piece was sourced from India

Tourmaline History

Tourmaline has been present in many cultures worldwide for millennia.

Shamans of ancient civilisations, including Native American people, used Tourmaline as a protective talisman to ward off negative energy.

In the 1700s, Tourmaline was regularly shipped to the Netherlands from Sri Lanka under the name "turmali" or "toramalli", a Sinhalese word meaning "something small from the Earth".

"Turmali" was a broad word used to describe many different stones of varying colours, but was most commonly used to describe Zircon

Eventually, the Dutch realised that this mineral was entirely different to Zircon, and in 1794, it finally was designated as "Tourmaline", with its name derived from the original Sinhalese.

The popularity of Tourmaline exploded in the 1800s, when famed mineralogist George Kunz introduced it to jeweller Tiffany and Co, where it became a highly prized commodity.

The black variety of Tourrmaline also gained a new name, Schorl, after being discovered in tin mines in the German town of the same name (now known as Zschorlau).

Black Tourmaline Metaphysical Properties

Exhibiting a highly cleansing aura, Black Tourmaline is a stone purported to have powerful calming properties.

Black Tourmaline is most famous for being a stone of protection and safety.

This black semi precious stone is believed to absorb and repel negative energies, and this is what it was famed for in antiquity.

Crystal healers believe that if you hold a piece of Black Tourmaline in your hand and meditate with it, it can be a potent stress reliever.

Black Tourmaline Chakras

Black Tourmaline is heavily associated with the Root Chakra, like Smoky Quartz.

This stone is said to be very grounding, and to offer security, strength, and protection on both a physical and psychic level.

How Hard Is Tourmaline?

Measuring 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, this black mineral is relatively hard and durable and resistant to scratching, but care should still be taken not to damage the crystal surface.

To clean the crystal, simply use water and dry it afterwards with a soft cloth.
